INSERTING URDU TEXT IN MS WORD
Some time one has to quote Urdu text in English essay, letter or any other document. If you are not using a multilingual supporting system, there is no way to key in Urdu characters, using English (i.e. left to right) word processor. But of course there are ways to do it. Urdu is to be written by using an appropriate Urdu software and then by exporting it to PDF or graphic file and then copy-pasting into MS Word document. The procedure goes this way:
At every step some of the sharpness of the letters is lost. I and my colleagues, specially Mr. Kulwant Singh have experimented with different methods and exchanged our results. The best results, according to Mr. Kulwant, can be achieved by using CorelDraw. My observation was that the same result is given also by using a PDF file, which is made from Illustrator 9. However the image thus obtained is of some hundreds KB. So, where high quality of print is not absolutely necessary and where size of the file needs to be small, it is better to stick to GIF file. All Urdu clips in this site are GIF files. The other way to insert Urdu text in English document is rather simpler. If you use a utility to write right to left language (Urdu, Persian, Arabic) using True Type Font, such as UrduWeb, UmairI, Urdu CheeChest, etc., then you can simply copy/paste it in MS Word document. This document can be read on computers with the same fonts loaded on them. These documents can easily be converted to PDF files that can be viewed by Acrobat Reader on any computer. You can view a sample of this method at web page: "sample page-2". I have mentioned in other pages that Unicode is changing all this. When enough Unicode fonts will be available and all Word processors and browsers will support them, then writing a multilingual and multi-alphabet document will certainly be more fun and need a different approach. Until then the above mentioned two methods will remain our options to insert Urdu text in a basically English MS Word document. An example of inserting Urdu text or word in English document using Unicode font is as follows:
The Urdu words inserted in above text are written in Tahoma font and if you donot have this font on your computer then you will see some strange characters instead of Urdu words. The following text is also written in a Unicode font.
