| URDU FONTS SOME OF URDU FONTS Urdu is written in a alphabet (actualy in abjad), which is basically a modification of Arabic abjad with additional characters to represent those Hindi vocal signs, which are not present in Arabic. Urdu is written in the opposite direction to English ie from right to left. It is an easy language to write fast in, because it has a built in shorthand! Unlike Arabic, where each letter is written distinctly, Urdu has further shorten the script and individual letters are represented in a word with even a smaller fraction and thus the word becomes a unique sign of its own. This is particularly the case with the most popular Urdu script NOORI NASTALIQ. (see fig. 1) Though in past the efforts were made to use type-able characters as have been popularly used for Arabic and Persian, but they never got popular with Urdu readers at large. The need of this is now again faded away with the begining of computer era, as now such software are successfully developed, which can produce high quality of Noori Nastaliq script. Fig 1. Illustration how with every key stroke for an additional Urdu Noori Nastaliq is not compatible with other Word processors, which use true type fonts. As one cannot expect recipient of the document or visitor of the Urdu website to have the same software or fonts as the writer or webdesigner, good Urdu software have built in feature to convert Urdu documents into some compatible formats, such as GIF, JPG, EPS and PDF. There are some Urdu software and utilities, which essentially use Urdu True type Fonts (see fig. 2). There are several of them. Usually they are developed to handle most of the languages, which are written from right to left. Once written, these files can be saved as RTF and can be opened in MS Word. But as MS Word is a left to right word processors, great care is to be taken to avoid left to right wrapping of the lines, which may result in shifting begining of the line to the lower line. So, any such distortion has to be fixed manually by cutting and pasting. To read these files one must have his/her computer linstalled with the same True Type Font. Even if the computer is installed with the same font, there is a possibility that, due to the different default page settings, line wrapping may distort the document. Therefore, after properly type setting and formating of the document, it is always wise to convert it to Adobe PDF. Converting a True Type Font document to PDF is very simple as compared to Noori Nastaliq document. Converting a Noori Nastaliq document into PDF is more complex process and involves: exporting InPage document into EPS format, opening EPS document in Adobe Illustrator and then saving it as PDF document. The final file, thus obtained is usually much "heavier" than that of True Type Font file. In addition to this the exporting feature of InPage creats for every page a separate file. Each of these files is individually converted into PDF format and then combined together into a single PDF document. Contrary to this True Type Font document is converted to PDF, from MS Word document in a single attempt. ******* *** ******* To see the examples of Urdu fonts, click here. |
