WORD COUNT FOR INVOICING FOR THE
TRANSLATION INTO OR FROM URDU
Word counting of a document in Urdu is rather a technical issue, depending upon the software used to write it. Urdu is written from Right to Left, using special software, fonts and Urdu word processors. Some Urdu software have this feature, while others do not. For example, if the ParsNegar is used, it is exported to MS Word and then can be counted by using "Tool - Word count" command.
InPage files can be viewed only in InPage-U. However they can be exported as graphic files or Acrobat PDF file. In both cases the word count is not possible. ParsNegar Urdu text can be pasted in MS Word document but to view it one needs to install proper Urdu-Fonts on the computer. To avoid this, it is better to deliver also ParsNegar file as Acrobat pdf file. Then again you can't have a word count. So, usually what most of the translation agencies do for calculating price is that they count English text (in case of Urdu <> English translation) irrespective of it being a source or target language.
If the same Urdu software is used by both, the client and freelancer, then Urdu word or character count does not impose any problem, as both parties can check them by using word count tool of the software.
Anyhow, it is easier for the “client”, who is not familiar with Urdu that the price is set on the basis of word count in English (or Slovene), whichever is target or source language.
In addition to this, in Urdu, it is not necessary to put a space between two words. So, the word count feature does not always give the true figures.
