PRICING

As a buyer, you might be seeing translation as a commodity - that is, as a standard product, such as 23-carat gold, which should have a standard price. But in fact it does not. Translation project is essentially “a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service”. Every translation is unique and different from other, no matter how similar it may look at the first glance to some other “products”.

Though there are translators who will quote fees and delivery times on any job sight unseen, some of them even quote prices on their home pages: so much per word, no matter what; it is difficult to quote a fixed price for all type of translation work. There are so many factors involved, and neither price nor turnover (in so many words per hour or day) can be fixed. Depending upon the complexity of the job translation of one page may take any time from half an hour to four hours or more.

Particularly for a Urdu translation, it is not enough that a translator is an educated, highly motivated, native speaker with good command of both the languages and subject matter, but he must also have the expertise of a project manager, a computer scientist, a documentalist, a DTP specialist, a terminologist, a language engineer, an evaluator, a localizer, and a technical writer. Only then he can deliver you a product, which you and your client can use without having special, expensive software to view, read or print it

In short the prices can be quoted only after seeing and analyzing the assignment. Further, as the definition of “fair price” goes: “any price agreed between two parties who are reasonably familiar with the complexity of the assignment are fair prices”. This is the reason I have written and published these pages to familiarize the buyers and employers (agencies) with what does it take to deliver a final product in Urdu.

Types of translation jobs:

  • Translation of individual words, terms, phrases

  • Translation of individual unconnected sentences.

  • Translation of small text, paragraphs,

  • Translation of complete text with simple, everyday content

  • Translation of professional text

  • Translation of professional article for publication

  • Translating, localizing the text taking cultural, idiomatic and other issues into consideration

  • Translation aimed for people with lower educational background

  • Translation of Web-pages

  • Language-check for suitability and to avoid unwished or negative connotations in a society or language.

Other factors, which have effects on project in term of time and efforts, are:

  • Whether the final delivery is to be a graphic file or pdf file or MS Word file?

  • Whether it involves use of software other than Urdu Word processor and Adobe distiller?

  • Whether it requires the use of PageMaker, CorelDraw, Illustrator etc. or not?

  • Format of the original (source) document; heavy files, PowerPoint files, taking long time to send and receive electronically and also to work with.

  • Special demands, which are technically difficult to implement in case of Urdu and require brain storming to come to a technical solution.

Respondent 7 (Software/Web Localisation) explained that;

"The situation is that in the localization (sic) industry, it has become far too business like and less academic. This means that business people don't understand the complexities of language and culture and try to pinch every penny out of per word translation as a commodity. Until there is better education in the industry, as well as training, localization will be seen as an expensive afterthought, and not as a necessary business component."
