Urdu: 

Urdu is my mother tongue.  Even as a student I was very active in literary activities of the student union in school and college. I also wrote for several Urdu magazines and one of my short story, in 1964, won an award of the best of the year short story from an Urdu literary magazine “Jhankaar”.

English: 

I got my education in Pakistan where English is the official language and is medium of education in all Colleges and Universities. The medium of the education in Karachi Polytechnic Institute was English. I graduated with distinction from the institute in 1964 and got employed in PIA (Pakistan International Airline). English was the working language of the Airline.

Most of my employments in Slovenian firms demanded a frequent use of English, either for communication with foreign business partners or for preparing technical documents, instructions and manuals for foreign customers.

Slovene: 

At the end of 1965, I came to Slovenia on scholarship for higher studies. The medium of education in Slovenia is naturally Slovenian language. During the first year in Slovenia, I attended a series of intensive language courses, all of which I passed with grade A. I married a Slovene native speaker in 1971 and settled in Slovenia. Ever since I have been using Slovene at home and at work for all type of communication. 

 Other languages: For jobs other than translation such as file-alignment, page-making, formatting, DTP etc. I have worked with the following languages: Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, Macedonian, Bulgarian, Russian, Polish, Czech, French, Spanish, German, Arabic, Persian, Punjabi, and Hindi. 

EXPERIENCE AS TRANSLATOR: 

I have more than 20 years of experience with translations at my regular job and as a freelancer. I have been working as a freelance translator for combination of the three languages: English, Slovene and Urdu. 

I have been offering my translation, editing and proofreading services worldwide through Internet and email since 1999. List of my clients includes firms and agencies from Slovenia, USA, UK, Czech, Hungary, Bulgaria, Vietnam, Pakistan and Japan.

     Some regular present jobs:

• Regular freelance translator for the engineering and trading company, “Mistral,d.o.o” for translating from English to Slovenian all technical and commercial documents.(1998 -  )

• Permanent freelance translator and language proof-reader at CIC-Center for International Competitiveness, Slovenia (1999-   ).

• Technical editor of professional journal, “Competitive Quarterly”, published by Centre of International Competitiveness. (1999 -  )

• Working for a translating agency from USA at their “File-alignment projects” for Slavic, EE and other languages (Slovene, Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian, Slovak, Czech, Russian, German, French, Spanish, etc.)-(Since 1999-).

• Since 1999, I have been working as translator, coordinator, reconciler for several translation projects of Patient Assessment Projects including Questionnaires, interviews, instructions and other medical literature in Urdu or Slovenian language for a couple of research institutes of USA and UK.

•    Translation of “INSTRUCTION MANUAL” for COMEC s.p.a., Italy. Translated from English to Slovenian.

•    Translation of prospects, user’s manuals and seminar material for machinery and equipment of “TECNIIDEA IMPIANTI”  for their water purification plants and sludge filter presses – from English to Slovenian.

•    Translation of technical legal documents, contracts, correspondence and specifications form Slovenian to English – (Sept. 2000)

•    English to Slovenian – translation of maintenance Manual for a bottle manufacturing plant, for a Japan based translation agency - (2001) 

•    Slovenian to English – translation of technical documents, User’s manual, maintenance manuals for excavator, crane and fork lifters for the machine manufacturing company IMP-SKIP, Ljubljana (1978-1982).

•    Slovenian to English – translation of publicity material, instructions and technical manuals for construction machinery and equipments for SCT, Ljubljana. (1983 - 1993)

•    English to Slovenian - Translation of Operation Manuals of the equipments for Refrigerant Reclaim System. 14800 words. (July 2002)

•      English to Urdu, translation of questionnaires for quality of life assessment scales - FACIT – CORE (Dec. 2000- onward), and several other long-term projects including questionnaires, interview forms, instructions, reports etc. On projects involving six or more translators, I acted as coordinator, councilor and finalizer of the documents.

•      English to Urdu, translation of publicity material, questionnaires, instructions and technical manuals for medical equipments (for USA and UK based health care institutes). (2000 - 2003).

• Complete translation of proceeding of the conference: “ACCESSION OF SLOVENE ENERGY SECTOR TO THE EUROPEAN ENERGY MARKET”, held in Ljubljana, June 1999. (Translation from Slovenian to English), published by CIC, Ljubljana, March 2000.
• Co-author of Slovenian version of  “ZASAVJE 2000+STRATEGIJA RAZVOJA ZASAVSKE REGIJE”: (“ZASAVJE 2000+, STRATEGY OF ZASAVJE REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT), published by Zagorje, April 1999. (50 pages A4 format)

• Editing and proofreading of the proceeding of the conference “INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS, INSTITUTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR TRANSITIONAL ECONOMIES” (presentations and discussions) held in Bled, Slovenia in April 1997 – published by CIC-Ljubljana, June 1999.  (ISBN 961-90727-1-5)  -- 120 000 words.

As Urdu is not written in Roman alphabet, rather it has its own script, written from right to left, it require Right/to/Left setting and Unicode fonts for MS Word. In old versions of Windows, it was not possible to write Urdu directly in MS Word and some special utilities to write Urdu were used, from where the text was copied/pasted into word. But this was not a perfect or even a practical solution. Therefore separate Urdu software were used to prepare Urdu documents. But now, the development of various Unicode fonts has made it possible to prepare MS Word Urdu documents in WindowsXP.
