ENGLISH
TO URDU TRANSLATION AND
PROBLEMS INVOLVED
I
have been asked again and again different questions regarding
preparation of documents in Urdu. The answers to these questions are
gathered here in this article.
As
Urdu is not written in Latin alphabets, but has its own peculiar alphabets
(abjad), a modified version of Arabic/Persian script, written and read from
right to left, it needs a software which can fulfil these
characteristics. In Urdu software cursor moves from right to left and text
is wrapped accordingly too.
There
are quite a few Urdu word softwares, capable of producing excellent
looking documents and printouts, but to read them on one’s computer, one
has to use the same software. These programs are not compatibles and fonts
of one program are also not compatible for use at any other application.
Names
of some of the Urdu word processors are: Sadaf95, Surkhab, Urdu 98, Urdu
Leadmaker, Urdu Page Composer, Urdu Perfect 5.1, Global, Gamma Uni True
Type, Katib, Parsnagar, InPage. These programs are not compatibles with
each other. Text written in one cannot be read or exported to other. Each
one of them has its own system, set of fonts and keyboard.
Two
of these software, commonly in use are: InPage and Parsnagar.
Inpage
is a full featured word processor similar to Word and is most commonly
used because it supports the most popular script (font) “NASTALIQ”.
This is a calligraphic script.Nastaliq
fonts are in-built ligatures comprising some 86 fonts files of all sorts
of letter combinations. InPage has also many other fonts. None
of these fonts is supported by MS Word and the files created in this
software can be read only by same version of InPage. However these files
can be exported as GIF, JPEG, TGA, TIF, PCX, EPS, and BMP.
InPage
can generate PDF file, either through the Adobe Distiller driver by using
the “Print” command in InPage or by exporting the file to “eps”
and then opening it in Adobe Illustrator. The method used, depend upon the
type of font used to write Urdu and the complexity of the document. Some
fonts cannot be embedded into PDF file using just Adobe Distiller. Since
InPage uses quite a number of fonts, these files become very big.
Parsnagar
is a utility; Urdu is written in this software and then exported to MS
Word. It is written in True Type Fonts (Umairi.ttf, weburdu.ttf, etc.). As
Urdu text is written from right to left, there is problem with text
wrapping feature of MS Word. So the text is to be formatted manually.
Though one can use all the features of MS Word to produce a good looking
document, a lot of manual, time consuming work is to be done. Any change
in size of font or width of column in a table may shift beginning of the
sentence to the next line. To fix this the text is needed to move by using
cut and paste or dragging to form individual lines of text.
To
read and edit documents of Parsnagar in MS Word, it is necessary to load
the Parsnagar fonts on PC.
Other
programs have similar limitations too.
EXAMPLES

Another
frequently asked question is: By which CAT Tool and DTP Software is your
language supported?
The
answer is: It is not supported by any CAT system.
There
is an Urdu Page Composer, namely “Safa Saz” and InPage also has
features for page making.
Documents
written with the help of ParsNagar in true type fonts and converted to MS
Word document are supported by any DTP software, which support other Word
documents.
Documents
of InPage, converted to PDF or graphic files are also supported by all DTP
Software.
